Course Details

This course, Foundational Strumming Patterns for Worship Guitarists, is designed specifically for newer guitarists who are looking for guidance on simple strum patterns and timing.

Sections of the Course

There are 3 sections that will take you from not being able to play strum patterns to playing simple and consistent rhythm guitar.:

  1. Simple Strum Pattern - You will play basic down strumming (1 2 3 4)

  2. Filler Strum Pattern - You will play basic down strumming to fill in the space between the main beats (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &)

  3. 16th Note Strum Pattern - You will play down and up strums to create a constant and consistent rhythmic pattern (1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a).

Each section has short instructional videos to help you understand the new strumming pattern and the techniques you’ll need.

Plus, there are corresponding practice videos (play-along tracks) you can use as if we’re in a face-to-face lesson and you’re practicing along with me. You’ll have plenty of examples to play along with before moving to the next section.

Our Approach to learning

This course focuses on timing and strum patterns, both with and without chords. This means you’ll internalize each rhythm through the following techniques:

  • Counting - saying the beats with your mouth

  • Clapping - clapping the beats with your hands

  • Muted Strumming - muting the strings with your fretting hand (the one you play chords with), and strumming the rhythm with your picking hand (the one you hold the pick with)

  • Full Strumming - playing chords and strumming at the same time

Timing and Simple Strum Patterns

This course will cover how to count and strum the following patterns. You’ll start playing songs right away with the most simple strum pattern and only get better.

Here are the strum patterns you’ll soon be able to play:

  • Single down strums on each strong beat: 1 2 3 4

  • Double down strums on each strong and weak beat: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

  • Full down and up strums to fill the spaces: 1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a

You will be able to play nearly any song with these strum patterns (and sound good)!

Strumming Techniques Covered

You’ll go step-by-step from the basics of how to hold a pick to playing full strum patterns with chords. You’ll learn how to put these techniques together as you go along. Here are the highlights:

  • Down strums on the strong beats and ‘&’

  • Up strums on the ‘e’ and ‘a’

Chords Used

In this course, you’ll use the G, C2, Em, and D chords.

Being able to play these chords before joining the course is strongly recommended.

  • Will my hands hurt?

For absolute beginners and those who have taken a few months off from playing, you will probably experience some discomfort, which is completely normal. What’s happening is your fingertips are developing callouses and your hand and forearm muscles are getting a workout!
